The internet is saturated with sites promising an example of a resume, so you don’t have to look too hard to find some samples cv’s.

These are fine to give you ideas - sometimes of what NOT to write - but whatever you do, please please do not simply copy them. You would be amazed at the amount of people who simply copy word for word what they have printed off and write their own details in, thereby ensuring they are sending out a resume to prospective employers that has been seen hundreds of times before.

It’s lazy, uninspired……and downright stupid.

By all means use them for ideas of layout and fonts, but nothing further.

You want your resume to look fresh, original and current. Of course resumes carry common themes, but you want to make sure yours stands out from the norm.

If you do need free resume examples to collate ideas, then spend lots of time looking at as many as you can. Make a long list, and take the best bits from that list. If you use a professional resume service to write for you, or resume creator software, it will make the job easier, after all, most people simply don’t have a talent for writing, and taking this into account, why should resume writing be any different. Free examples are fine to get you thinking, but are you prepared to leave one of the most important documents you will ever write to chance?

If you have the opportunity, don’t be coy in asking friends and family if they would be prepared to ask the Human Resources departments where they work to copy an example of a resume (obviously with personal details blacked out). Most people, particuarly in the field of Human Resources, are happy to help people trying to get ahead with employment.
